Introduction

(This page is under construction and contains information that is still subject to update and correction.) This page describes the HL7 Australia FHIR Connectathon that will be held on Friday 26th May as part of the the one-day HL7 Australia event being held in Sydney.

  • Track 1: Introduction to FHIR

HL7 Australia and The Australian Digital Health Agency are pleased to host activities to provide a technical introduction to FHIR.

This track is aimed at those new to FHIR and will enable a detailed guided walk-through using web-based material. 

As this connectathon will be run over one day it would be advised that people looking to attended the beginner track familiarise themselves with the web martial we will be covering. This can be found at http://fhir-drills.github.io/. 

The site consists of a set of tutorials and it would be good if people could take a look at the Overview page and attempt the Simple Patient tutorial. This first tutorial talks the user through setting up the key tool we will use for the rest of the day, Postman. If attended can make some progress on this setup task then we might make it to the FHIR Exercises near the end of the day, which is the fun bit!

That said, don’t fret. I will be there to help on the day and there is no better way to learn than by making mistakes.

  • Track 2: Australian Base Profiles Implementation Guide

Track 2: Australian Base Profiles Implementation Guide (Walkthrough)

The HL7 Australia Patient Administration working group is pleased to coordinate a connectathon around FHIR (STU3) implementation guide material.

The scope of profiles for this event include the following:

      • Organisation: Australian Healthcare Organisation
      • Patient: Australian Human Patient
      • Practitioner Role: Australian Provider
      • Practitioner: Australian Practitioner

Specifications for these can be found published on the AU Base IG May Connectathon publication.

This material provides some guidance on commonly used identifying content, extensions and terminology usage in the Australian healthcare context. This track is aimed at FHIR enabled system owners to engage in the use of FHIR profiling for implementation and validation.

Administrative/Clinical systems than can (or are capable) of producing FHIR STU3 resource instances need to be accessible on site to enable validation of content.

  • Track 3: FHIR Terminology Meetup

Terminology service operators and experts are meeting up to talk FHIR terminology support, capability and future developments.  It is a great opportunity for users and suppliers of clinical terminology information systems to get together and understand the current state of standards and plan for the future with key players in national terminology services strategy and service provision.

Be ready to talk terminolgies and how FHIR can assist with terminology availability for use, distribution and management of coding systems and value sets.


Connectathon Organization

The connectathon will be held over 1 day.

It will be based on the STU3 verion of the spec at [1] 

Test servers will be available (actually, they are already - FHIR Test Servers ).

The main parts to the event are:

  • Introducing the tracks - to give you an idea on what they are about
  • Connecting with a track of activity; and work on connectivity with others in that track
  • A mini-showcase (show and tell) - an opportunity to talk about how your day went

Each stream has a coordinator that will introduce themselves on the day - they will:

  • In the lead up to the connectathon: track participants, respond to queries about scenarios, connect participants to each other
  • During the connectathon act as a test mediator / progress tracker
  • Track emergent issues that should be fed back to the committees
